Let’s talk about one of the latest failures i have read.

So, today i’m reviewing The ones who got away, number one of the series, but of course you can read it as a standalone too.

When i started this i really liked the plot, like really-really liked it, and it reminded me of What you wish for which i love like crazy. So, i was full of enthusiasm and interested in reading this but at the end i’m just dissapointed by this one.

Before i say more, let’s see together what is this about:

Liv Arias is coming back to her school after twelve years. Twelve diffucult years had passed since the school gun shooting (*TRIGGER WARNING HERE*) that cost so many lifes. Now, a documentary’s coming up so all of the children came back in order to speak about their beloved friends. Finn Doorsy came too, her first love. The guy that loved too much, the guy that left her hiding into a closet the night of the shootings, because he wanted to save the Other girl, the girl he came with…

This book really frustrated me. At first, everything was cool. Old friends gathering to speak and think of their beloved ones. We see how much the school gun shooting affected their lifes, and how they tried to deal with these injuries. But really soon the author started to understate this main theme and the book just converted to SEX, SEX, SEX. Finn and Live tried to hide their feelings after so many years, and they couldn’t and after they decided to be together, they just had sex on every page. And the sex was… so cringy. Cringy all the way down. They had HUGE conversations at the time they made love about how good they were at it (?) Made NO SENSE!

One thing i liked: Liv’s company and how protective they were with her, caring for her and loving her unconditionally. Next books are about them but i’m not sure if i will read them because the main thing that bothered me was the author’s writing. So…

Tropes

  • PTSD main character
  • school gun shooting
  • second chance love

“The fractured pieces of her world had finally landed in just the right place, creating a picture she’d never imagined. One that took her breath away.
Broken glass still made art.
Sometimes, the most beautiful kind.”

«On one hand, this felt comfortable. They’d always talked easily with each other. But at the same time, they were strangers now. Strangers who had this big, breathing beast between them.»
